Panthers vs Raiders Picks & Predictions for Week 3: Carolina's Woes Continue in Sin City

Sunday sees the Carolina Panthers take on the Las Vegas Raiders in Andy Dalton’s first start of the season.

The benching of Bryce Young has caused the market to move in Carolina’s favor, but I’m not buying into the noise as my Panthers vs. Raiders predictions lay out why I’m taking the home side to cover.

Check out my NFL picks for September 22 below!

Panthers vs Raiders prediction

My best betRaiders -6 (-108 at BetMGM)

My analysisIt’s hard to argue with the logic Andy Dalton could offer the team a better chance of winning. After all, Bryce Young has completed 31 of 56 passes for just 245 yards, failing to score a touchdown while being picked off three times.

Dalton has only played one full game since joi…

José Mourinho says it is hard to compete with clubs that ‘just break the rules’

José Mourinho has bemoaned the difficulty of being in competition with clubs that “just break the rules and forget the financial fair play”, as he outlined how he intended to reshape Tottenham into Champions League qualifiers.

The Spurs manager was asked about the comments of Mikel Arteta, his counterpart at Arsenal, and whether he agreed with him about the need in effect to gamble on spending big on players in order to close the gap to clubs in Europe’s elite tournament.

Earlier in the week Mourinho had been critical of the decision to fine Manchester City €10m (£9m) but not ban them from Uefa competition after the…

Everton v Brentford: match preview

Frank Lampard started his reign at Goodison Park with a win over Brentford and could finish the job of securing the club’s Premier League status with another, providing Leeds do not beat Brighton earlier in the day. Thomas Frank’s side are much improved since that FA Cup meeting in February, however, with Christian Eriksen helping to inspire a run of six wins in nine league games, while by Lampard’s admission Everton looked tired in their goalless draw at Watford in midweek. Goodison will again hope to spark an uplift with two home games remaining to avoid relegation. Andy Hunter

Port Vale’s Connor Ripley: ‘When I play Boro I’m not a fan any more’

Connor Ripley was born at the James Cook University hospital in Middlesbrough, just under three miles down the road from the Riverside Stadium, and spent nine years on the books of his boyhood club. His father, Stuart, is regarded a homegrown Boro hero, the former winger an integral part of the team that returned to the top flight in 1988 via successive promotions, having been locked out of Ayresome Park when the club entered liquidation.

“The Ripley name has got …” the 30-year-old says, restarting his sentence. “The Stuart Ripley name has got a bit of clout in Middlesbrough, I’m not sure Connor Ripley has … my dad’s team was special to Middlesbrough and that’s why everyone will always relate to them.”

Why Your Team Sucks 2019: Miami Dolphins

Some people are fans of the Miami Dolphins. But many, many more people are NOT fans of the Miami Dolphins. This 2019 Deadspin NFL team preview is for those in the latter group. Read all the previews so far here. Your team: Miami Dolphins. Your 2018 record: 7-9. I’m floored this team won seven games. I really am. It’s a legitimate accomplishment given that this team’s resting state is “What if the Jaguars, but no identity?” Did you know the 2018 Dolphins started off a red-hot 3-0? Do you remember them beating the Pats on a miracle lateral play at the gun (the Dolphins lost every remaining game after they pulled that off; the Pats would go on to win the Super Bowl)? I completely forgot about all that. I am fucking terrible at my job. Regardless, I just cannot believe th…

The Best Things We Watched In 2016

When we weren’t busy watching sports contests, we watched some things. Here are the best things we saw this year. Don’t Breathe Don’t Breathe boasts an absolutely perfect concept. Three young burglars break into an old blind man’s house and the tables are turned almost immediately. He locks them in, presents a proficiency with weapons and a secret he’ll kill to protect, and then hits the lights. If all horror movies are on some level about the fear of the dark, this is the purest distillation of horror. You are trapped in the dark, you cannot leave, and you cannot see—and you’re trapped with something that can. The execution is flawed. There is a second-act twist which introduces unnecessary, discomfiting overtones to the film even as it removes any sympathy viewers might s…

Why Your Team Sucks 2012: Cincinnati Bengals

Some people are fans of the Cincinnati Bengals. But many, many more people are NOT fans of the Cincinnati Bengals. This 2012 Deadspin NFL team preview is for those in the latter group. Read the other Why Your Team Sucks 2012 previews here. 1. Coach for life. The Bengals quietly gave head coach Marvin Lewis a two-year extension two weeks ago. Normally, a contract extension means nothing in the coaching world, since shitty coaches with contract extensions get fired all the time (Brad Childress being a prime recent example). But that's not the case when you're dealing with Bengals owner Mike Brown. Mike Brown would rather watch his own children die than eat a contract, and so you Bengals fans are in for at least three more years of Lewis, a coach who is exceedingly professional y…
